From Old Archive

Hi folks :D It's been awhile I haven't posted any illustration here. U think so? :L
Anyway for now I'd like to show some of my old (and favorite) illustrations. There are six pages here, either for Shabiba or Times; some are from 2010, some from 2011. For all of them, I only made the illustrations, all the rest was done by designers. Have fun!

World Trade Graphic

This one will be my first graphic work shown on my blog :) Well, there's no such thing about the story, but still it's a challenge for me to create this one! Anyway it was for page 5 Muashar (economic) section of Shabiba. So here it goes.. there were some plain charts about the world export and import from September '08 until March '11. It covers big industrial countries, some European countries, and emerging countries. What I need to do is to reproduce the charts to make it more interesting to read (by connecting those charts with map).

Original source

After I traced, reduced, and arranged all the charts on the work area ( 19 cm by 16.5 cm), I had to flip the charts since it was for Arabic language. I think I spent 3 hours doing it :D What a long, long time, hehehe. Marcelo helped me out with the final touch. Gracias my friend! :)

NatGeo Graphics Presentation

Couple of days ago I flew to Dubai for a day-trip to attend presentation by Juan Velasco, the art director of National Geographic magz. I left Oman around 2:50 PM and reached there around 4:00 PM. This was my second short-visit to Dubai so I was still unfamiliar with the city. I used the metro to reach the university. I had like 45 min to enjoy the metro ride for first time. So clumsy! :-"P

When I arrived in the university I was told not to take photos. Alright, then after 5 minutes walking I found the building (room C 227, there was no 427 I think..). Not very long time after I took my seat the presentation was begun. It was opened by some people from Gulf News and Al Bayan Newspapers. Before Juan started, they had shown some infographics done by some publication including from Shabiba (The World Cup statistic and Anatomy of Beach Games)!

This pic was emailed from Douglas, thanx! :)

Juan opened the speaking by showing some of their covers. Then he began to explain about how to art-direct and how they create graphics.

Typical infographics deadlines for major stories can last for 7 month up to 1 year, sometimes even more.

And for the record, Wikipedia is not a valid source! :D

Graphic = Journalism 75% (Research 25% + Write 25% + Edit 25%) + Design/illustration 25%

He showed so many examples of graphics they did. Some of them, for sure, were familiar to me since I already saw them in SND winners book or even somewhere else.

Love+Hate

Loving and hating. Loving you makes my heart beats too fast and hating you makes me wanna break your skeleton into pieces. Well, just another experiment! ;P

I decided to put strong colors. It's out of my habit since I usually like calm and soft color. And yes it's fun :D I erased some of the edges of the color to make it rough.

And last but not least here it goes my favorite step: applying texture, brush, and finishing touch!

Favorite Commentary

These are some of my favorite commentary illustrations since February 2011 so far :) I usually produce like more than 20 commentary illustrations in one month but oh well, I'm so picky picking up my favorites :P
